In a resolute stance, the Global Student Forum (GSF) lends its unwavering support to Ali Ramezani, a dedicated student of electrical engineering from Iran, whose commitment to human rights and academic freedom has led to unjust persecution. Ramezani, hailed as a laureate of the International Microelectronics Olympiad 2023 and a prominent member of Iran’s national team, finds himself ensnared in a web of baseless accusations due to his unwavering advocacy for student rights and principles of peace and liberty in his homeland.
Before his unjust detention in October 2023, Ramezani pursued his master’s degree at Amirkabir University of Technology, all the while actively engaged in advancing human rights causes. His contributions to the AmirKabir Newsletter, a platform amplifying the voices of the Iranian student movement, have been pivotal in shedding light on and challenging the myriad violations of student rights and academic freedoms within Iran.
Ramezani’s arrest, followed by a staggering three-year and seven-month imprisonment on politically motivated charges, coupled with his expulsion from the university, serves as a stark reminder of the precarious landscape faced by student activists in Iran. His unwavering dedication to exposing injustices, notably through the AmirKabir Newsletter during times of heightened political sensitivity, underscores his unwavering commitment to truth, freedom, and justice.
The GSF vehemently denounces the suppression of peaceful student activism and the flagrant disregard for academic freedoms, exemplified by the unjust treatment meted out to Ali Ramezani and countless others. The right to education and free expression stands as a cornerstone of civil society, and no student or academic should endure reprisals for daring to champion these fundamental principles.
We implore the international community, academic institutions worldwide, and human rights organizations to unite with us in demanding the immediate release of Ali Ramezani and all students and academics unjustly detained for their peaceful activism. Furthermore, we call upon the Iranian authorities to uphold the autonomy of educational institutions and respect the rights of students to express their views and engage in peaceful activism devoid of fear or intimidation.
