Urgent Appeal: Iran Must Quash Conviction and Death Sentence of Activist Sharifeh Mohammadi

Iranian authorities must immediately quash the conviction and death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, a prominent labour and women’s rights activist, and ensure her immediate release. Mohammadi was sentenced to death by a Revolutionary Court in Rasht for “baghi” (“armed rebellion against the state”), a charge that has been vigorously contested by human rights organizations and Iranian activists.

The conviction followed an alarmingly unfair trial process, marred by serious allegations of torture and ill-treatment. Mohammadi, arrested in December 2023, was reportedly subjected to brutal beatings that left visible bruises, a clear violation of her human rights. These allegations suggest a deliberate attempt to extract confessions under duress, undermining the credibility of the judicial proceedings against her.

The case of Sharifeh Mohammadi highlights a broader pattern of repression in Iran, where authorities frequently use the death penalty as a tool of political control. This practice stands in stark contrast to international human rights norms, which advocate for the abolition of the death penalty and the protection of individuals’ rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly.

Mohammadi’s activism focused on advocating for labor rights and women’s rights, both areas that have seen significant suppression by the Iranian government. Her work represents a courageous stand for justice and equality, making her prosecution an egregious attack on civil society and human rights defenders in Iran.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have called on the Iranian government to respect international legal standards and immediately halt the use of the death penalty. They emphasize the urgent need for judicial reform and the protection of activists who peacefully exercise their rights.

The international community must intensify its pressure on Iran to ensure Mohammadi’s release and to hold accountable those responsible for her torture and wrongful conviction. Diplomatic channels and international forums should be leveraged to condemn Iran’s human rights abuses and to advocate for systemic changes within its legal system.

Sharifeh Mohammadi’s plight is a poignant reminder of the severe risks faced by activists in Iran. It is imperative that global attention remains focused on her case to prevent further miscarriages of justice and to support the fundamental rights of all Iranian citizens. The fight for Sharifeh Mohammadi’s freedom is not just about saving one life; it is about challenging an oppressive system that stifles dissent and undermines the principles of justice and human dignity.

The Iranian government must act immediately to rectify this grave injustice by quashing Sharifeh Mohammadi’s conviction and death sentence, and by ensuring her unconditional release. Only then can it begin to restore its credibility on the international stage and affirm its commitment to human rights.
