In a powerful display of protest, a group of female political prisoners in Evin Prison’s women’s ward initiated a hunger strike on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. Their primary objective is to condemn the increasing frequency of executions in Iran.
This hunger strike against the death penalty was first launched on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, by death-row inmates at Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. The initial call to action came in response to the executions of detained protesters Mohammad Qobadlou and Farhad Salimi.
This marks the fourth round of hunger strikes against the death penalty initiated by political prisoners across various prisons, including Evin, Qezel Hesar, Mashhad, Karaj, Khorramabad, and Saqqez. The overarching goal of the campaign is to vehemently denounce executions and demand an immediate cessation of such actions.
On January 30, death-row prisoners in Qezel Hesar issued a statement, declaring their intent to amplify their voices through a weekly hunger strike every Tuesday. They strategically chose Tuesdays as it often signifies the final moments for fellow inmates, typically transferred to solitary confinement a few days prior.
The ongoing resistance of political prisoners against the clerical regime’s execution practices persists amid a troubling escalation in the issuance of death sentences. The women in Evin Prison’s women’s ward add their voices to this collective outcry, emphasizing their commitment to opposing the regime’s oppressive measures.
