During the uprising in Iran from September to December 2022, intelligence and security forces resorted to egregious acts of sexual violence as a means to crush dissent. Survivors, arbitrarily detained protesters, bore witness to violent rapes and other forms of sexual abuse at the hands of those tasked with maintaining order. Shockingly, prosecutors and judges, rather than ensuring justice, either ignored or concealed survivors’ complaints, perpetuating a culture of impunity.
This report exposes the horrifying instances of sexual violence inflicted upon individuals during the uprising. Disturbingly, despite the gravity of these crimes, no officials have faced prosecution for their heinous actions. The lack of accountability within the domestic legal system leaves survivors without recourse for justice.
Amnesty International is urging nations to take action by initiating criminal investigations within their jurisdictions against suspected perpetrators under the principle of universal jurisdiction. This approach aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes, even if justice cannot be achieved within the confines of Iran’s legal system. Amnesty International further calls for the issuance of international arrest warrants against the perpetrators implicated in this report.
As we delve into the harrowing details of this report, it becomes evident that the weaponization of sexual violence not only violates the fundamental rights of individuals but also underscores the urgent need for international intervention to ensure justice prevails.
