UN Experts Urge Iran to Halt Execution of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani

A group of United Nations human rights experts has urgently called on Iran to halt the execution of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani. The Supreme Court of Iran recently upheld their death sentences, raising serious concerns about the fairness of their trials, which were reportedly marred by torture and forced confessions.

The UN Special Procedures Experts (@UN_SPExperts) have been in direct contact with Iranian authorities, urging them to reconsider the impending executions. The experts expressed grave concerns over the violations of due process and fair trial standards, emphasizing that the death penalty should not be applied in cases where there is credible evidence of coerced confessions and human rights abuses.

Concerns Over Unfair Trials and Torture Allegations

According to reports from human rights organizations and independent observers, Ehsani and Hassani were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during their detention. It is alleged that their confessions, which played a critical role in their convictions, were extracted under duress. International human rights laws strictly prohibit the use of torture and forced confessions as evidence in judicial proceedings.

The UN experts emphasized that Iran, as a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), has an obligation to uphold fair trial standards and protect individuals from cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment. They warned that carrying out the executions under these circumstances would constitute an egregious violation of international law.

Growing International Pressure

The call from UN experts comes amid growing international condemnation of Iran’s use of the death penalty. Iran has one of the highest execution rates in the world, and human rights organizations frequently report cases where death sentences are imposed following unfair trials.

The international community, including European governments and advocacy groups, has repeatedly urged Iran to reform its judicial practices and ensure that all individuals receive fair and impartial trials. Many human rights defenders argue that the Iranian judiciary’s reliance on forced confessions and its lack of transparency undermine the legitimacy of its legal system.

Appeals for Clemency and Judicial Reform

UN human rights officials have urged Iran to immediately halt the planned executions and grant Ehsani and Hassani a fair retrial in accordance with international standards. They also called for an independent investigation into allegations of torture and coercion, ensuring accountability for those responsible for such abuses.

In a broader context, the experts reiterated their opposition to the death penalty, particularly in cases where serious doubts exist regarding the integrity of the judicial process. They encouraged Iranian authorities to adopt reforms that align with international human rights obligations and to impose a moratorium on executions as a step toward eventual abolition.

Iran’s Response and the Path Forward

The Iranian government has not yet issued an official response to the UN experts’ latest appeal. However, international pressure continues to mount, with activists and foreign diplomats calling for diplomatic engagement to prevent further human rights violations.

As the execution date approaches, global attention remains focused on Iran’s legal system and its treatment of political prisoners and individuals facing capital punishment. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for Iran’s human rights record and its relations with the international community.
