UK MPs Mark Anniversary of Iran’s 2022 Uprising, Call for Tougher Policy on Tehran

In the House of Commons, Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum gathered to mark the anniversary of Iran’s nationwide uprising in 2022. The event, organized by human rights advocates and concerned MPs, served as a platform to highlight the ongoing human rights crisis in Iran and to call for a firmer UK policy towards the Iranian regime.

The conference brought together parliamentarians, civil society representatives, and families of detainees. Testimonies and reports presented at the session painted a stark picture of systematic repression in Iran, including arbitrary arrests, torture, political executions, and severe restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

Speakers from different parties stressed the moral responsibility of the UK to act.

  • One opposition MP underlined the need for stronger international solidarity with the Iranian people, insisting that silence must end. He emphasized that the UK should hold the regime accountable through diplomatic and targeted sanctions.
  • A member of the governing party acknowledged that current international measures had some effect but argued that they were far from sufficient. He called for tighter sanctions, greater support for political refugees, and increased transparency about Iran’s human rights violations.
  • Another MP highlighted the role of media freedom, warning that without free, uncensored reporting from inside Iran, the world receives only “half-truths,” which further undermines trust in the international system.

The most emotional moments came when families of protesters shared their personal stories. They described loved ones detained without legal access for weeks, subjected to psychological and physical abuse, or facing imminent execution after unfair trials. Their testimonies deeply moved many MPs, several of whom promised to pursue legal and diplomatic action more vigorously.

At the conclusion of the session, a joint statement was issued urging the UK government to:

  1. Expand targeted sanctions against officials responsible for human rights violations in Iran;
  2. Support judicial investigations into allegations of torture, arbitrary detention, and abuses against protesters;
  3. Provide greater protection for human rights defenders, journalists, and activists both inside and outside Iran;
  4. Offer political asylum and safe passage for those persecuted for their civic engagement.

The conference was not only an act of solidarity but also a message to the international community: the issue of human rights in Iran cannot be ignored. The MPs stressed that consistent and resolute policies by Western governments—particularly the UK—could play a meaningful role in pressuring the Iranian authorities and supporting the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom and justice.
