Liberal Democrat Spokesperson Condemns Repression of Protests in Iran

During a House of Commons debate on 5 January 2026, Calum Miller, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, strongly condemned the Iranian authorities for the violent repression of public demonstrations.

Miller told Parliament that the Liberal Democrats “condemn the violent repression of public demonstrations in Iran,” highlighting serious concerns about ongoing human rights abuses and the suppression of fundamental freedoms.

Miller called on the UK Government to work closely with European and regional partners to coordinate “lawful external pressure” on Iran. He specifically pressed the Government to clarify what steps it is taking alongside allies to respond to Iran’s actions through diplomatic and legal means.

The Liberal Democrat spokesperson also renewed his party’s call for the UK to formally proscribe the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) under UK law, asking when the Government would finally commit to this measure.

Responding on behalf of the Government, the Minister reaffirmed the UK’s position on the importance of fundamental freedoms in Iran. He stated that the Government would continue to voice its support for the right to peaceful assembly and the right to communication in Iran, working both independently and alongside international partners.

The exchange underscored growing cross-party concern in Parliament over the Iranian government’s treatment of protesters and the wider human rights situation in the country.
