Human Rights Violations Against Women in Iran: A Grim June 2024 Report

In June 2024, Human Rights Organizations reported significant human rights violations against women in Iran. According to their statistics and documents, eight female activists were arrested and two were sentenced to prison by the judicial system of the Iranian regime. Additionally, at least 15 femicide cases were documented in various Iranian cities during the same period.

Arrests of Female Activists

June 2024 saw the arrest of eight female activists in different Iranian cities, representing 10% of all detainees that month. The arrested women and their locations are:

  1. Samira Nejatian from Tehran
  2. Houra Nikbakht from Tehran
  3. Saba Azarpik from Tehran
  4. Hamideh Zarei from Rasht
  5. Mahta Sadri from Rasht
  6. Tahereh Norouzi from Shiraz
  7. Maryam Mehrabi from Mobarakeh
  8. Atefeh Rangriz from Damghan

Sentencing of Women Activists

Two female activists received prison sentences totaling eight years. Atena Farghdani from Tehran was sentenced to six years, while Maryam Bairami from Tabriz received a two-year sentence. These arrests and convictions highlight the systemic discrimination and increased pressure on female activists. The Iranian regime policies perpetuate gender apartheid, enforcing sexual and gender segregation and criminalizing sexual and gender minorities’ identities, further marginalizing women.

Femicide Cases

Report for June 2024 documented at least 15 femicides across various Iranian cities. The victims were killed by close relatives, including husbands, brothers, uncles, and sons-in-law.

Among these, three cases were attributed to “honor killings,” while family disputes were the motive in twelve cases.

Femicide represents the most extreme form of misogyny, often linked to honor killings. Misogynistic laws and patriarchal attitudes in Iran contribute significantly to femicide, facilitating these crimes by creating an environment where violence against women is normalized and often goes unpunished.
